How You Can Help

Volunteering:

  • Do you have a few spare hours a week? You can help your Library by volunteering to shelve books, to work at the circulation desk or to help with the Children's Story Time or other event. Do you have a special interest, talent or ability you'd like to share? Contact the Director for more information.
  • Contact the Children's Librarian about Junior Volunteer (ages 12 and up) opportunities.
  • Volunteers are among our most valuable resources. The Library couldn't function without them.

Friends of the Library:

  • The Friends of the Brookline Public Library is an association of people interested in promoting and improving the Library, its facilities, and its service.
  • The Friends sponsor events such as the annual spring paperback book sale, the annual fall book and bake sale, raffles, craft sales, seminars, and demonstrations. The proceeds go to buy books, computer equipment, children's programs, furniture, and other items and services beyond the Library's ordinary budget.
  • How can you join? Stop by the Library and pick up a brochure. There are four categories of membership:
  • Member $10 annually
    Patron $25 annually
    Lifetime $100 one-time donation
    Business $25 annually (non-voting)
  • The Friends meet at the Library on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. No December meeting. Contact Friends Chair, Jodi Tochko, for more information: 673-1417.
  • Next Book Sale: Saturday, May 1, 2010. Hardcover Book & Bake Sale. Book drops:

Sponsoring Authors

  • Can't wait to read your favorite author's next book? If you sponsor this author, you will be the first to check out the author's next book.
  • How do you sponsor an author? Stop by or call the Library and tell a librarian you want to sponsor an author. If the author is not currently sponsored, you can sign up as the sponsor. We will order the author's next book as part of our regular book orders. When the book comes in, you will be the first to read it. We will also put a gift bookplate with your name in the front of the book. You will then receive a bill for the discounted cost of the book.
  • Remember: you can sponsor as many authors as you like! Stop by the Library and look at the Sponsored Authors list on the bulletin board by the photocopier and in the Children's Room. Many of your fellow patrons are sponsoring their favorite authors -- why don't you? You can also sponsor individual books if you wish.

Sponsoring Magazines

  • The library offers over 70 magazines for patrons' use; each issue is available to take home. Perhaps you'd like to sponsor a yearly subscription to one. Do you have a favorite among the currently offered magazines? The annual subscriptions range from about $12 to $20, with a few more expensive.
  • How do you sponsor a specific magazine? Stop by or call the Library and tell a librarian which one you'd like to sponsor. You will receive recognition for your gift as well as the option of checking out each new edition first, along with a bill for the annual cost of the subscription.
  • Stop by the Library and peruse the library's current magazine selections, or check out the list online. (We're in the process of updating the list of choices; stay tuned.) We have Children's and Young Adult magazines to pick from too!

Donating Books, Videos, DVDS and Audiotapes and CDs

  • We welcome gifts of books, audiotapes, CDs, DVDs, or videos, either new or in good condition. Bring them into the Library and tell a librarian if you want to have a bookplate acknowledgment placed in the item.

Sponsoring Programs

  • Throughout the year, the Library offers special programs such as the summer reading program and story hour. There are many opportunities to sponsor these programs. You can donate craft supplies, sponsor an activity day, donate reading incentives, provide for music or artist's enrichment program, or sponsor museum passes. Contact the Library Director if you are interested in donating to any program.

General Support

  • Please support us by attending town meetings and the spring and fall book sales.
