Library Cards:
- Library cards are available free of charge to all Brookline citizens.
Proof of address is required (tax bill, license, car registration, etc.)
Non-residents can purchase a card for $40. Non-residents employed in
Brookline can get a library card free of charge as long as they are
employed in Brookline.
- Children must be at least 5 years old to get a card. Children under
18 years require a parent's signature to get a library card.
- The fee for a lost library card is $3.
- Stop by the Library to apply for a card.

Checking Out Materials:
- Books, magazines and audio books (cassettes and CD) are checked out
for 2 weeks and can be renewed three times unless another patron has
reserved them.
- Videos (VHS tapes and DVDs) are checked out for 2 weeks and can be
renewed three times unless another patron has reserved them.
- There is no limit to the number of books and magazines you can check
out.
- However, you are limited to 4 videos (VHS tapes or DVDs), audio books
(cassettes or cd) per person per checkout of two weeks.
- Reserved books are checked out for 2 weeks, but cannot be renewed
if other patrons are waiting for them.
- Inter-library loan items are checked out for 3 weeks. Interlibrary
loans may not be renewed.

Renewals:
- Most items may be renewed three times either at the library or by
phone (603) 673-3330.
- Items on reserve to another patron and interlibrary loan items may
not be renewed.
- Extended renewal periods for vacations or special projects can be
arranged by request.

Fines:
- Books & magazines: $.05 cents per day.
- Videos, audios & museum passes: $.50 per day.
- The maximum fine for all items is $5.
- Senior citizens are exempt from fines.
- Volunteers are exempt from fines.

Bookdrop Box:
- The bookdrop box is located by the back entrance for after-hours drop-off
of all materials, now including audio and
video items.
- The bookdrop is emptied 15 minutes before closing.
Books dropped in the box after closing will be checked in on the next
open day.

Computerized Card Catalog:
- The Athena library automation computer system allows patrons to search
the Library's collection by title, author, or subject. Ask a librarian
to show you how it works.
- The Brookline Public Library catalog is not yet available online.
However, the entire state collection, including Brookline Public Library,
is available at Nhu-Pac
If you find a book you would like to borrow that is not in our collection,
you can request it through Inter Library Loan.

How to Reserve Items:
- To reserve a book, stop in or call and give us the title, author,
your name or library card number, and phone number. We will call you
when the book becomes available.

Interlibrary Loans:
- If you want to read a particular book and you can't find it in our
Library, ask us for an Interlibrary Loan Request. We can find out if
another library in the state has your book. You can search the catalogs
of all libraries in the state at Nhu-Pac,
but you must ask the Brookline Public Library to request the book for
you. Once we request that book, you should receive it in approximately
two weeks or less.

Materials for the Visually Impaired, Talking Books Program:
- Do you know anyone who has a physical problem that keeps them from
comfortably reading regular printed materials?
- Recorded materials from the National Library Service for the Blind
and Physically Handicapped can be provided to them upon request. How
do you get access to these materials? Stop by the library and fill out
an application.
- Have the Library Director, physician, or nurse sign the application.
Send the application to the New Hampshire State Library: Library Services
to Persons with Disabilities.
- You will be sent a catalog. Place an order for a maximum of 4 items.
A record player and cassette player will be sent to your house along
with several recorded books. As you finish the recorded books, send
them back postage-free and you will be sent more recordings.
- You can keep the record and cassette players while you participate
in the program. This service is free to registered patrons: there is
no registration fee, no charge for the recorded books, no deposit or
fee for the use of the equipment, no charges for equipment repair, and
no postage to pay. Stop by the Library today to get an application!

Books for the Homebound
- This book delivery program provides library materials for citizens
of Brookline who for some reason or another are unable to attend the
public library.
- For use of this program some valid reasons include but are not limited
to: short/long term illness; non-driver; physical challenges.
- Materials Provided: Books (Some Large Print), Videos & DVDs, Magazines,
Books on Tape or CD
- Benefits:No overdue fines. Longer borrowing periods possible.
- To use this program register at the library and a plan will be developed
to meet your needs. For more information call the library at 673-3330.

Internet:
- There are 5 public access internet computers for patron use; three
on the adult floor and two on the children's floor.
- Children under 18 must have a parental permisson form signed and on
file to access the Internet at the library. Please print out and sign
the parental
authorization form and bring to the library.
- Computer use is limited to 30 minutes per person if others are waiting.
- The Internet computers also have word processing capability for patron
use.

Computer Printer:
- A computer printer is networked to the internet computers and is available
for patron use. The fees are 10 cents per black and white page. Limited
to 20 pages.

- A photocopier is available for your use. The fee is 10 cents per copy
or 20 cents per large-format copy.

EBSCOhost Databases:
- Through the New Hampshire State Library, we are now accessing EBSCO's
12 databases covering general interest, business and health resources.
This system is user friendly and has been employed often here at the
library with great results.
- MasterFile Premier has full text for more than 1900 periodicals; Business
Source Elite provides full text coverage for 1075 business periodicals;
Health Source: Consumer Edition contains more than 300 full text health
periodicals as well as 1000 health pamphlets and 20 health reference
books.
- Also included is the NoveList database which can help search through
over 100,000 fiction titles and is an excellent resource to help with
reader's advisory questions.
- There are also databases geared for children and young adults to provide
them with quality resources for their informational needs.

Hillstown Collection (video, DVD, books on tape and CD):
- We belong to the oldest library cooperative in New Hampshire, the
Hillstown Co-op.
- Every other month we receive approximately 24 videos/DVDs available
to borrow; every 3 months we receive approximately 30 audiobooks/CDs.
- You can check out a maximum of 4 videos or DVDs per family for 2 weeks.
- You can check out as many audiobooks as you wish for 2 weeks.

- Our second-floor community room is available free of charge to any
individual or nonprofit group of Brookline.

Display Case:
- The main floor of the Brookline Public Library has a beautiful display
case given in memory of Geraldine Phillips, a former Brookline librarian.
- This locked case features rotating monthly displays of family collections,
historic memorabilia, or celebrated books and authors.
- Please sign up at the circulation desk with your name and the month you want your items
to be displayed. Share your collection with your fellow patrons and the
community!
